Bulgaria is a former communist country that entered the European Union on 1 January 2007. It has experienced strong economic growth since it had a major economic downturn in 1996. the successive governments have demonstrated the necessary commitment to economic reforms and our responsible fiscal planning, but they have failed to rein in rising inflation and a large current account deficits. Bulgaria has averaged more than 6% GDP growth since 2004, and is attracting significant amounts of foreign direct investment and the creation of exchange traded funds, but corruption in the public administration remains a significant challenge.
